In today’s era of modern technology, virtual reality is the new king. With the recent introduction of metaverse by the parent company of Facebook, the popularity and demand of VR are through the roof. And Sony is utilizing this opportunity to release their latest PlayStation VR2.
The PlayStation VR2, or PSVR2, is a virtual reality headset that works with the PlayStation 5 gaming console. The purpose of this virtual reality headset is to take your gaming experience to a whole new level.
The first official announcement of the PlayStation VR2 was done in February of 2021. But that being said, Hideaki Nishino, the senior vice president of platform experience, stated that there are still places of development and improvement going on.
Sony has a massive team of VR game developers who are working on this project to offer the smoothest VR experience for their customers. It is also announced to be a huge improvement on its predecessor. But, what exact technology will be implemented on this VR and what will be the specs?

PlayStation VR2 specs
Sony has already released some of the specifications about the hardware that we are waiting so long for. From the display to the Sense Controller, we certainly have a lot to look forward to.
The headset of the PSVR2 will be offering a full-on 4k HDR display with an impressive 100-degree FOV ( Field of View). The foveated rendering is another spec that we are waiting to see. The OLED display will be offering a 2000 x 2040 eye resolution of the user with an impressive frame rate of up to 120 Hz. The Sense controller offers a built-in lithium-ion rechargeable battery.
And the great news is, it can be connected to the PS5 console with a single USB type C cable.
According to Sony, the headset will come with 4 individual integrated cameras. These cameras will utilize the latest eye-tracking technology to give you a greater sense of immersion.
The PSVR2 sense controller will offer features like haptic feedback, a six-axis motion sensing system, touch detection, position tracking and so much more. These features will even allow the player to feel the sense of thrust when they dive into the game or accelerate a car in the virtual world.
PlayStation VR2 Release Date
When it comes to the actual release date of the PSVR2, Sony is currently more focused on getting their customers enough PS5 consoles. Keep in mind, that the first introduction of the first-gen PSVR was three years after the PS4 launch.
But no need to worry, because VR technology has come a long way since then. And we are expecting the official launch of PSVR2 later this year.
The PlayStation CEO JIM Ryan went on to explain that, “Immersiveness has been one of the megatrends in the gaming industry over the last 10 years or so,”. And he believes that once someone gets their first-hand experience with the phenomena of virtual reality technology, there will be no going back. He also stated that they are very please with the learnings they got from customer experiences with the PlayStation VR. And this will help them shape the PSVR2 to an elevated state.
But the good news is, along with the announcement of this amazing technology, some of the first games on this platform have already been announced. This goes to show that the release of the PSVR2 can be much sooner than we expect.
Pavlov shack and low-fi are some of the first games announced. Recently Horizon call of the Mountain, the beautiful sequel to the record-breaking game horizon zero dawn is announced to be supported on the PSVR2. The game is developed from the ground up to have amazing support for the upcoming PSVR2 and is being finalized by the developers Firesprite and Guerrilla.
Now that we are in 2022, we can expect the hardware to be released very soon. As Sony does not want to let go of the opportunity of the uprising hype behind VR technology, it is high time they reveal their next-gen successor.
